Our Story & Values
GKR Karate was founded in 1984 with a mission to make martial arts training accessible to everyone. It began with a vision of creating a welcoming and supportive community. The goal was to ensure that people of all backgrounds could experience the physical and mental benefits of karate. Over the years, the organization has stayed committed to this inclusive philosophy.
Regardless of age, gender, or experience, GKR Karate offers a training environment where anyone can grow. Students are encouraged to build confidence, discipline, and resilience through consistent practice. The programs are designed to meet individuals where they are and help them progress at their own pace. This approach ensures that everyone feels valued and supported throughout their martial arts journey.

History of GKR Karate
Founded in Adelaide, Australia in 1984 by Kancho Robert Sullivan OAM, GKR Karate (Go-Kan-Ryu) has grown from a single dojo into one of the world’s largest and most successful martial arts organisations.
Kancho Sullivan’s vision was to create a style of karate that combined practical self-defence with accessibility for people of all ages and abilities. Today, GKR Karate operates dojos throughout Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and other countries around the world.
GKR Karate emphasises speed, timing, technique, and accuracy over brute strength, making it suitable for women, children, and people of all fitness levels and physical abilities.
